![]() There was a real element of choice to be made in what you built and how you used it: paladins and skirmishers served vastly different purposes and had hugely different costs, fr'instance. In AoE2 you're defending a medieval empire with light/heavy cavalry, camels, heavy infantry, pikemen, archers/hand cannoneers, skirmishers, cavalry archers, monks, catapaults/scorpions, rams/trebuchets/bombards, and special units ranging from war elephants to throwing axemen to Teutonic knights. It just wasn't handled that great, and maybe it can't be handled that great (the move between Medieval 2: Total War and Empire: Total War suffered from a similar problem as what I'm about to describe, IMHO). I might be alone in my thinking, but I'll take a stab at this as I was having a similar conversation with a friend on this very topic the other night.įor me, it was the addition of gunpowder. I definitely say get it though, and pick up age of mythology while you're at it if you haven't played that yet. The setting just wasn't as interesting to most people as medieval Europe, and I think that was an issue as well. I think part of the problem was that there were fewer civilizations to play and they didn't feel as different. The trading posts offered small bonuses, and in a long game against many players were probably important points of conflict, but in smaller or shorter games they really weren't worth the investment. ![]() ![]() The home city feature was great in theory but may have been a little unbalanced and there were few shipments that really felt worth while. In the end, I think the added game mechanics fell flat. I would be the first to tell you that AoE 2 was the best, but 3 was certainly a fun game. It is most definitely worth buying and playing the shit out of. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion r/pcgaming - PC gaming-specific subreddit for general PC gaming news, discussion and gaming tech support r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion r/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting. r/gamingsuggestions - Go here to help you find your next game to play r/gaming4gamers - Discussion, bar the Hivemind
